After the recent discussion surrounding Manchester City and the possibility of trophies being taken away from them between 2009 and 2018, there has naturally been debate over what would happen to those honours.Dan Smith looked at whether Arsene Wenger could somehow end up with the one English domestic medal missing from his collection.For me, though, Arsenal being handed the title of 2018 League Cup winners despite losing 3-0 to Manchester City at Wembley just doesn’t seem correct.As we can all probably remember, and by simply looking at the scoreline, Arsenal didn’t turn up for the occasion.If anything, it was the opposite.We hardly posed a threat to Pep Guardiola’s side, apart from an early missed effort from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang that gave us Gooners a bit of hope at the time.For myself personally, it is one of the most disappointing finals I’ve ever seen Arsenal lose, even more so than the 2019 Europa League defeat to Chelsea, when we lost 4-1.At least we managed to find the back of the net on that woeful day.Arsenal should win trophies the Arsenal wayTo say Arsenal could have a third League Cup added to their collection as a freebie just doesn’t make sense.Future supporters looking back on that final would be able to see that the men from North London thoroughly didn’t deserve the honour that day.Can you imagine walking around the Arsenal Museum reading that we’ve achieved three League Cups?I can’t myself. It seems absurd for obvious reasons.We may not have won the competition since 1993 versus Sheffield Wednesday, when we became the first English side in history to win the Cup double after also lifting the FA Cup against the Yorkshire side, but I think we’d rather see Arsenal win it the Arsenal way.Being handed the 2018 title certainly wouldn’t feel like that.(Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)Stripping trophies would rewrite football historyI personally believe Manchester City should be allowed to retain their honours, but be expelled from the English Football League and placed in the National League, completely deterring them and other outfits from violating the rules in such a corrupt manner.What they’ve done is wrong, and I know Chelsea and other clubs not even in the top flight have broken these rules, but nowhere near to the same extent.From a neutral perspective, removing any trophy fairly won on the pitch shouldn’t be the case here because it simply doesn’t feel right.It completely changes the fluent nature of football history during the 2010s, when Manchester City admittedly dominated.We can’t pretend that didn’t happen simply by stripping them of their titles.At least a thorough points deduction is required, but not the stripping of major honours – not in my opinion anyway.Liam HardingWould you want Arsenal to be recognised as 2018 League Cup winners if Manchester City were stripped of the trophy, or should honours only ever be decided on the pitch?
