A court has granted the Nationalist Party’s request for an urgent hearing of its constitutional case against Public Broadcasting Services and the Broadcasting Authority, with proceedings set to begin on 15th October, according to Times of Malta.The Nationalist Party is alleging that TVM’s news coverage has been systematically biased towards the government and that the two entities have repeatedly failed to ensure political balance and impartiality on the national broadcaster. These remain allegations which the court has yet to determine.The party has pointed to figures covering June 2025 to May 2026 showing 532 soundbites featuring government members compared with 66 featuring members of the Opposition. The government has previously argued that most of its appearances related to ministers carrying out their official duties.The case also raises concerns about TVM presenter Ricky Caruana. PN alleges that Caruana promoted government projects and Labour activities while presenting a prime-time current affairs programme. Caruana himself is not a party to the case, and the PN is not seeking a judgment against him personally.PN welcomed the court’s decision to hear the case urgently, describing its action as an attempt to secure what it considers balanced and impartial public broadcasting.The constitutional case will now begin being heard on 15th October.•
