Arsene Wenger has been told to stand against Gianni Infantino in the upcoming election to become the next FIFA president.Infantino remains under major pressure in his role following a summer full of controversy surrounding the World Cup.Wenger has been told to run against the under-pressure Infantino in the next FIFA presidential electionGettyHis creation of the FIFA Peace Prize, a phone call with Donald Trump regarding Folarin Balogun’s red card at the 2026 World Cup and his subsequently exposed plans to sell off stakes in the tournament (FFE) have led to backlash from the world of football. The Italian went on to scrap FFE, but he isn’t planning on resigning, intending to stand again for FIFA’s presidency instead. But that hasn’t stopped people from hitting out at him, with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin the latest to do so again. In a recent address to the European Football Clubs (EFC) general assembly, Ceferin didn’t mention Infantino by name, but largely hinted that things need to change at FIFA. “An emperor is persuaded that he is wearing magnificent clothes – clothes which, he is told, only the foolish or unfit cannot see,” he said. “His court goes along with it. Until a child simply says aloud what everyone can see: the emperor is naked. Perhaps the moral of the story is this: convenient words cannot change uncomfortable realities.”Ceferin added: “Imagine that he creates a Peace Prize for a political leader without his own board having any say in its creation or its recipient.“Then the same political leader calls, during the biggest competition in world football, to complain about a decision on the pitch, the rules say one thing, the phone rings and the decision changes.“Well my friends, it’s time to say enough.”Could Wenger replace Infantino?A FIFA council meeting will take place in October, with the next presidential elections scheduled for March 2027.But will voters say ‘enough’ as Ceferin called for? And if they do, who could be the person to replace Infantino?UEFA president Ceferin has slammed Infantino and called for change at the top of FIFAGettyAnd Wenger has been urged by Jordan to be that change, taking over from InfantinoGettytalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan agreed with Ceferin that a change needs to be made and the cycle of presidents corrupted by power.“Ceferin has resonance in what he is saying,” Jordan said. “We are looking at Infantino’s attitude and the fact that he has gotten drunk on his own power and influence.“This is a system thing. If the system keeps on throwing out people who get into positions of great authority and don’t do the things they should be doing as an NFP (not-for-profit organisation), whose sole function in life is to protect the values of the game, how do you get these people repeatedly thrown into these positions that replicate each time the next incarnation comes up?”Jordan then urged Wenger to run for the position to bring his values and love for the game to the forefront of FIFA. The legendary Arsenal manager has been FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development since 2019 and has often been lauded for his impact on the sport and new rule suggestions. “I think he [Infantino] is now [open to reform],” Jordan said. “Stand against him Ceferin, or someone like that. Or Wenger. What has Wenger said on Infantino?Wenger released a statement denying any involvement in Infantino’s controversial FFE plans in a statement last month. He said: “The recent events at FIFA deserve some clarity from my side.“At FIFA, I am the Chief of Global Football Development. “Together with my team, I oversee the data analysis of the game, the FIFA online training centre, the development of youth education through 60 academies across 60 countries where they are most needed, and youth competitions around the world.“In addition, I am a technical adviser to IFAB.“I was not involved in this strategic plan and first became aware of the project through media reports.“The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question, because I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity.”“Wenger will be distancing himself, like Wile E. Coyote, from Gianni Infantino in terms of what Infantino has said and done.“Wenger is all about the purity of football and the value of football to the society that it seeks to serve.“Someone like Wenger…he’s a very intelligent man. Stand against Infantino, create different outcomes if that’s what you want.”
