Tottenham Hotspur may have a strong case to take Man City to court after their rivals were found guilty of 114 Premier League breaches.Man City have been found to have breached the Premier League’s financial regulations 114 times between 2009 and 2018, with the development potentially set to have huge ramifications on the English game.Spurs Web previously covered that Tottenham are one of four Premier League clubs who reserved their right to take Man City to court following the guilty verdict.It has been suggested that the Lilywhites could sue the Manchester club for £200m due to lost Champions League revenue across that nine-year period.Photo by ANDREW YATES / AFP via Getty ImagesEach lost Champions League season could net Tottenham €50mTottenham missed out on Champions League qualification by one spot for four of the nine seasons in question: 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2014-15.Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that each season a club had to settle for Europa League football rather than the Champions League could see them claim a minimum of €50m (£42.7m), due to the lost prize money and matchday revenue.When asked how much City may have to pay in terms of lawsuits to rivals like Tottenham, Maguire told INews: “Overall, the bill could be hundreds of millions if you look at the number of clubs involved. You would calculate the size of the claim by looking at the rewards of qualifying for the Champions League and the potential prize money.“For winning the Champions League, it is €150m. It’s €40m for the Europa League, so you would look at the amount potentially lost by competing in one competition rather than the other. Some clubs who finished fifth will be looking at a minimum of €50m claim for loss of prize money.“Then you could legitimately say that instead of hosting Bayern Munich or Real Madrid on a Wednesday night, we ended up hosting the second-best team in Denmark on a Thursday night, so our gate receipts were down. Bonuses from sponsors are down too. All of that goes into the claims. I think individual clubs’ [including Tottenham] claims could exceed the amount Burnley settled for.”Former Spurs players or managers could also sue Man CityMaguire suggested that there is also a small possibility that City would have to pay compensation to former Tottenham players and managers.The financial expert explained that they may have a case to take the Manchester club to court due to their lost bonuses as a result of the Etihad hierarchy not operating within the rules.Maguire added: “At present it’s seen as a remote chance, but could players on an individual or class action basis take action based on bonuses missed out on?“I’ve seen contracts with a 25 per cent pay rise for playing in the Champions League. A player on £4m-a-year has been denied £1m. If there are 25 people in the squad, that potentially adds up.
