Shivajinagar received 17.1 mm of rain on Monday evening, the first time in 58 days that Pune’s main weather office has crossed the double-digit mark. The last time was August 1, when Shivajinagar had recorded a 24 hour rainfall reading of 30.3 mm. The very next day, however, the rainfall reading fell to 1.5 mm.Shivajinagar has witnessed long stretches of single-digit rain in many years but this was the second longest since 2014. “The longest was in 2018 when the weather station had gone 64 consecutive days without double-digit rainfall,” says an expert of the weather organisation, Vagaries of the Weather.When the skies opened up on Monday evening, NDA recorded 15 mm of rainfall while Pashan received 2 mm and Hadapsar 1 mm. The rain clouds did not reach many parts of the city. Chinchwad, Lavale, Magarpatta and Koregaon Park did not receive any rain while only traces of rain fell in Lohegaon.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast similar weather for the next three days, with a yellow alert issued for thunderstorm, lightning, gusty winds and light to moderate rain in Pune and the Ghats of Pune, among others, on September 29.Though thunderstorms are localised and isolated events caused by convective heating, Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD, says that these showers are indicative that the withdrawal of the monsoon is close. “Monsoon withdrawal is likely from Mumbai and Pune by early October and from the entire Maharashtra by the middle of October,” he adds.Maharashtra, which has declared drought in 75 per cent of the state, is experiencing a 19 per cent deficit in cumulative rainfall as of September 28. The country, as a whole, has a 12 per cent deficit. According to IMD, Pune district still has a 14 per cent surplus in cumulative seasonal rainfall.Monday evening’s rain did not cause an appreciable change in the temperature. Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4 degree C, while Pashan, Lohegaon, Chinchwad and Koregaon Park were almost as warm. The minimum temperature in the city ranged from 18.4 degree C in Pashan to 22.5 degree C in Koregaon Park.
