Shivakumar said the Congress government is committed to comprehensive development of Chamarajanagar district by empowering its people economically, educationally and socially.Speaking after launching developmental works for Kollegal and Hanur Assembly constituencies at a function held at Kollegal on Wednesday, Mr. Shivakumar said the entire government stands with the people of Chamarajanagar district.Recalling that a Cabinet meeting held under the leadership of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had sanctioned works worth ₹3,000 crore for the district, putting it on the path of progress, Mr. Shivakumar said the “Guarantee government” he was leading had formulated several programmes and laid the foundation stone for various works.He remarked that “good times” had come to Kollegal and development had arrived in Hanur, where foundation stones had been laid for a total of more than 25 projects. “This marks a major and promising beginning for new projects. We have resolved to ensure comprehensive development,” he said.Referring to the demand to rename Chamarajanagar University as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Mr. Shivakumar said the proposal will be discussed in the Cabinet and a decision in the regard will be taken.Claiming that the government has been releasing crores of rupees for various irrigation works aimed at making more land in Chamarajanagar district suitable for agriculture, the Chief Minister said a work order has been issued for comprehensive development of a series of lakes under the Suvarnavathi irrigation project at a cost of ₹120 crore.Also, adequate funds have been provided for groundwater development in Hanur while canal works have been taken up near Chamarajanagar. Similarly, irrigation works costing ₹450 crore have been taken up in Gundlupet taluk.Earlier, fielding reporters queries at the KHB helipad in Hanur, Mr. Shivakumar said the ₹490 crore worth irrigation project to address the drinking water needs of Hanur will be discussed in the Cabinet, as well as by various committees. Subsequently, approvals will have to be obtained from the boards and tenders will be invited. “The work will begin thereafter. There is a procedure to be followed,” he explained.‘Chamarajanagar close to my heart’Mr. Shivakumar said Chamarajanagar district was close to his heart and pointed out that Kanakapura Assembly constituency, which he represents, shares a border with the district “It is a green region and its people are hardworking. Agriculture is their livelihood. It is a blessed land that has provided shelter to people from all sections of society. It is a land steeped in the history of Male Mahadeshwara. This region has a rich cultural heritage and is deeply rooted in the faith of its people. Thousands of people from my constituency undertake pilgrimages on foot, crossing the Cauvery river, to reach this religious centre,” he said.Referring to the presence of B.R. Hills, Gopalaswamy Betta and Siddappaji temple in the district, Mr. Shivakumar said he had walked to Siddappaji temple. “It is a family tradition for us to offer prayers to Siddappaji every year after Sankranti,” he said while stating that he was considering the construction of a community hall on the property he owned there.Meanwhile, a host of Ministers including Minister in-charge of Chamarajanagar district C. Puttarangashetty, besides Kollegal MLA A.R. Krishnamurthy and Hanur MLA M.R.
