The Malta Police Union has renewed its call for a comprehensive insurance scheme for police officers following an incident in Valletta which left members of the force injured while restraining an aggressive man.The incident happened at around 12.30pm after officers travelling along St Mark Street were stopped and informed of an argument between two Maltese men.Police said the two men, aged 32 and 45, had jumped from the pavement to an area around half a storey below street level during the altercation.While officers were assisting them, the 32-year-old man allegedly became aggressive and attacked an inspector and two constables as they attempted to handcuff him.The inspector was struck in the head, while one of the constables also required medical treatment. The second constable was not injured.Both men involved in the original argument were arrested and taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where they were certified as suffering from grievous injuries.The Malta Police Union said it had already offered support to its members involved in the incident and wished the injured officers a speedy recovery.“Policing is a high-risk and demanding profession,” the union said, adding that it was unacceptable for officers who put their safety at risk every day to remain without adequate insurance protection.The union once again called for a comprehensive insurance scheme to be introduced without further delay, saying officers and their families should also be given protection and security.Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.•
