A historic shelter located at No. 1, Triq il-Kbira, Żurrieq, has reopened to the public after the property, which was under the responsibility of the Lands Authority, was transferred on a five-year lease to the Żurrieq Local Council.The shelter covers an area of approximately 57 square metres. Through the transfer, the Local Council will be able to manage, maintain and conserve it as a site of historical and cultural importance.The shelter has the potential to serve as an educational and community space that keeps the country’s collective memory alive and commemorates the experiences and sacrifices of those who lived through wartime.Minister for Housing and Lands Owen Bonnici said the reopening of the site is an example of how historical heritage can remain relevant to present and future generations.“This project shows how, through collaboration between government entities and local councils, we can give new life to historical sites and turn them into spaces for information, education and the benefit of the community,” Minister Bonnici said.Żurrieq Local Council Mayor Rita Grima said that, following the necessary cleaning works, the shelter can now once again be used by the community.“We are happy that this historic shelter has been brought back to life. Now that the necessary cleaning has been carried out, the people of Żurrieq will be able to visit and enjoy it, while we will also be able to organise activities there,” she concluded.Tag someone you know is interested•
