Absent from the buyers' sheet on the first day of the Goffs Orby Sale, Godolphin made their presence felt on Tuesday with two quickfire purchases of yearlings from the first crop of dual Breeders' Cup winner and French Classic hero Modern Games.Top of the list was the half-sister to the G1 Prix Morny winner Senorita Bonita, who eventually brought the hammer down at €1.3 million. A daughter of Starspangledbanner, Senorita Bonita topped the Tattersall Craven Breeze-up Sale in April but only after she had been bought back by her breeders Michael and Anne Gaffney as both a foal and a yearling. Her exploits on the track this summer for owners Victorious Forever, which include victory in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, ensured that that her younger sibling would be hot property. Coolmore's MV Magnier was one determined bidder, but it was Anthony Stroud who had the last say on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation, which bred and raced Modern Games.“It's been an unbelievable year,” said Michael Gaffney of Churchtown House Stud. “In 12 months, the whole thing has changed so much. This is what makes everything so easy. I have to thank my family and my brother Tom. It's just been so brilliant. And I really have to thank Mr Stroud and all the Darley people for having faith in our family.”He continued, “It is every breeder's absolute dream. It is nerve-wracking, and it is brilliant, and it is just the most fantastic feeling of all time. This is what dreams are made of and this is the pavilion for dreams.“It is unbelievable what a horse can do. In 12 months, I've gone from trying to sell her sister—and failing at the yearling sales—to this. It's unreal. So I'm so thankful to everybody involved, and thankful to my wife and my kids and everybody at home, and the lads with me here, Carl and Rachel, who've done a super job altogether. I'm so thankful to everybody.“When you sell something, if it can win a Listed race, you've done an amazing job. To say we've gone from a maiden, second at Royal Ascot, winning a Group 2, winning a Group 1 and now this—the kick, it's sky-rocketing. So, yeah, it is just the most fantastic feeling ever.“It's brilliant, and I thank everybody who had faith and came in here and bid for our horse, and who have come back to us over the years. People coming back to us—that's what it's all about.”Gaffney added that the filly's dam, homebred Belicious (Ruler Of The World), has a Sioux Nation filly foal and is in foal to Camille Pissarro. “She'll probably go back to Starspangledbanner,” he said.
