Keep your eyes on the skies today, because around 67 White Storks have arrived over the Maltese Islands as part of an extraordinary migration journey across the Mediterranean.BirdLife Malta said it was alerted by international partners that GPS-tracked storks were heading towards Malta, allowing researchers to follow part of their journey in real time.Several birds in the flock are carrying tracking devices fitted as part of a research project by German ornithologists studying how White Storks migrate.And their chosen route has been particularly interesting.Rather than heading towards Africa along the more westerly route through the Strait of Gibraltar, the birds followed the Central-Eastern Mediterranean flyway, travelling through Italy and Sicily before making their way towards Malta.The tracked birds reached the islands at around 1.30pm today alongside another flock, bringing the total number spotted to approximately 67.Meanwhile, BirdLife Malta members stationed at Buskett also observed several rare eagles passing over the islands, some of which were fitted with satellite tags.BirdLife is encouraging people to enjoy the impressive sight from a respectful distance, particularly if the birds come down to rest or roost.White Storks and birds of prey are highly protected, with the organisation urging hunters and the wider public to ensure the migrating birds are left undisturbed as they continue their journey.Anyone who witnesses suspected illegal activity involving the storks or other protected birds is being encouraged to contact BirdLife Malta or the police.So if you’re out and about today, don’t forget to look up, you might just catch one of Malta’s most spectacular migration sights. •
