Roma are set to leave the Stadio Olimpico for a new £1billion super stadium, which will host the 2032 European Championship.The Italian giants have played at the city’s Olympic stadium since 1953, but they will finally leave for pastures new after a mega ground was approved.Rome’s Stadio Olimpico hosts Roma and Lazio for their home Serie A gamesGettyHowever, it has never been truly theirs, with the club having to share it with bitter rivals Lazio, the national team as well as the men’s rugby side as well.But this new stadium is set to have a 60,000 capacity and it has received final approval. It will be a huge project costing £1.17billion with construction planned to start in March 2027.The plan is for the construction to take two and a half years and be open in 2029 for Roma to move in and claim their own home, possibly in time for the start of the 2029/30 season.Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri confirmed the decision after a conference on Monday.He said: “This is the first large, new facility that will elevate Rome’s footballing scene and represent a significant redevelopment of a part of our city.“The conditions are now in place to proceed expeditiously and begin construction in early 2027, and have the stadium ready in three years. Construction will last precisely two and a half years, so the stadium could be ready as early as 2029.”And those sentiments were echoed by Italy’s Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, who said: “Yes, it was a great team effort, as was done for the Jubilee; all the institutions collaborated.“This was about finally completing a long-awaited project: our thoughts turn to Dino Viola and Franco Sensi. This is a great result for all Roma fans, obviously, but also for the entire city and the country.“It marks a process of modernisation for the city and also of extremely important social and environmental redevelopment. Three years from now, by the calculations, we are at the end of 2029.“The construction site lasts two and a half years, if we start in spring 2027, do the math: it could even be ready at the end of 2029.”Roma’s bright futureThe Stadio Olimpico has provided some magical moments for Roma.Francesco Totti played all of his home games there, and they celebrated their first European trophy at the ground as well.But with Italy co-hosting the 2032 edition of the European Championship, the government want new, modern stadiums.As such, Roma aren’t the only huge Italian club getting a new ground, with the San Siro being demolished.That iconic venue currently hosts AC Milan and Inter Milan, and the construction of the new ground on the same site is set to begin next year.Again, the plan is for that to be ready in time for the Euro 2032 with Italy co-hosting the tournament alongside Turkey.
