We’re Not Really here.Because the fact is that in the wake of the damning verdict on City’s 115 charges for breaking financial rules, all of those iconic moments came as a result of cheating on an industrial scale.And we aren’t talking about a few extra quid here.By inflating their commercial revenues to the tune of more than £900m, City gained an unfair financial advantage that gave them the power to blow their rivals out of the water in the transfer market.By continuing to protest their innocence, in what could be argued an overly-aggressive manner, the club top brass are only making the stain they have left on the beautiful game even more indelible.Kevin de Bruyne is rightly regarded as one of the Premier League’s best ever players, but would he have ever found his way to the Etihad without City manipulating the system?De Bruyne’s grace and elegance is certainly not befitting of the murky world City have been found guilty of operating in.Would they have even been able to afford a manager like Guardiola? It would be interesting to get his thoughts right now having always portrayed himself as a man of honour, brought up on the traditions of the legendary Johan Cruyff.City won seven major trophies between 2009 to 2018GettyWe all know how tribal football can be but how can even the most ardent City supporter look back on the incredible teams the great Guardiola put together knowing it was a by-product of ‘sham’ contracts?If City’s seven Premier League titles were expunged from the record books, one of the many serious sanctions on the table assuming their appeal fails, then Manchester United are among the clubs who would benefit by default.Instead of the agony of that last-ditch Aguero goal, Sir Alex Ferguson would have another championship to add to his already huge haul.Jose Mourinho has gone on record as saying he should be handed a winner’s medal for when he led United to second place behind City in 2018, still cited by the Portuguese as one of his greatest managerial achievements.Even the much-maligned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be upgraded from runner-up to league champion from the 2020-21 campaign.But as a United fan, I don’t want the belated glory.The Red Devils could stand to benefit if City’s trophies are wiped, but is it worth it?GettyPretending the Aguero goal did not happen would not take away the pain I felt on that fateful May afternoon.Talk about an emotional roller-coaster!I went into the final day believing we had zero chance of claiming the Premier League crown having blown a 4-2 lead at home to Everton before losing at City weeks earlier.Fast forward to when the final whistle blew on the 1-0 win at Sunderland and United were champions, having been thrown the most unlikely lifeline by a QPR side fighting to avoid relegation.As the saying goes, it is the hope that kills you and the hope was snatched away in the cruellest fashion.I’d like to think I am a bit more mature about such matters these days having fathered four children, but I was too upset to speak to anyone for days after and felt like I was in some kind of shock.Aguero’s iconic goal in 2013 broke United hearts on the final dayAFPSo no, taking the title away from City and gifting it to United like some kind of hand-me-down would feel hollow in the extreme.But please don’t misconstrue me saying I don’t want United to be given an extra three titles as saying City should keep them. They should simply be declared null and void.After all, they weren’t really there.
