Water has begun flowing through St Paul’s Tank in Miżieb for the first time in decades, as work progresses on a €2.5 million project aimed at strengthening water supplies across northern Malta. The Water Services Corporation project will give the structure, which dates back to 1914, a new role within the region’s drinking-water system.Once completed, the project is expected to double northern Malta’s water reserve capacity, providing greater flexibility during periods of high demand, maintenance works or unexpected disruptions. The new distribution route will connect the Naxxar Reservoir with the Mellieħa Reservoir, with water travelling through St Paul’s Tank before continuing towards Mellieħa.Energy and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli visited the ongoing works alongside Water Services Corporation CEO Karl Cilia, opening the valve that allowed water to flow through the tank for the first time. The project also includes a new pumping station equipped with four pumps, new pipelines and electrical infrastructure, as well as the rehabilitation of the historic tank and its surroundings.Measuring around 62 metres long, 18 metres wide and 8.5 metres high, most of the century-old structure lies underground.According to the ministry, the project is being carried out internally by Water Services Corporation teams, from its design through to implementation.Did you know this century-old water structure was hidden away in Miżieb?•
