Good morning folks. Let’s begin today with some Interlull updates from our participants. Viktor Gyokeres, after scoring a winning goal against Romania in Sweden’s last game, was on the scoresheet again in their 3-1 victory over Poland. He got on the end of a nice cross to the back post, the movement was decent, and the finish well controlled – watch here. He spoke last week about how he needs to do better to play more regularly for Arsenal, and this won’t do his chances any harm at all. As we wait for news of the extent of Kai Havertz’s problem (I’m told it’s not too serious), any kind of confidence boost for Gyokeres is very welcome. We have a lot of football to play in the coming months, and we need him to play plenty of minutes and score goals in the process. Doing well on international duty can’t hurt one bit. Elsewhere, Riccardo Calafiori looks to have sat out Italy’s 4-1 win over Turkey, having played the full 90 of their previous game. Hopefully that’s just some common sense being applied in an Interlull where some teams will play four games, and given they face France on Friday, he may well have been kept fresh for what is, on paper at least, a more difficult fixture. There’s also a nice video doing the rounds of him making a young fan very happy by giving him his shirt. I like stuff like that, and it’s a decent way to start your day. Rather than pick up your mobile doom device to be bombarded by some of the worst shit imaginable by simply perusing the news headlines, this is far better. It’s why my go-to early morning content is dog videos. Yes, I want to see a Golden Retriever dive bombing into a swimming pool and a German Shepherd puppy growling at a door-stop rather than learning about some of the most terrible and stupid bastards on the planet doing increasingly abhorrent and evil things. If you find yourself mired in the misery every time you pick up your phone, I heartily recommend curating the algorithms with something you actually like. Meanwhile, Ezri Konsa is reportedly a doubt for England ahead of their game against Czechia tonight. The Arsenal man was training alone yesterday apparently, but I can’t find any specifics about the kind of injury it is. Hopefully nothing too serious. Our Spanish contingent are also in action this evening facing Croatia in Seville, while down under Brazil face Australia in a friendly after a 1-1 draw between the two sides last week. Hopefully the game tonight is on a better pitch, because it looked like a cross between a Sunday league ground and no-man’s-land in that other one. The Martin Odegaard/Bernardo Silva stuff rumbles on. The Portuguese international was asked after the game about the Arsenal captain being unhappy with his grubby foul and said ‘That’s football my friend’. Odegaard himself pulled no punches, saying: “It’s a head fog from him, he just kicks me down long after I’ve played the ball away. I don’t understand what he’s doing. It does not belong on a football pitch. It’s a shame that people do that.” I mentioned the fact we play Real Madrid in December, but it turns out they could come face to face well before that, as Norway play Portugal again on Sunday. I suppose Odegaard’s participation depends on how his ankle is, but he sounded relatively positive about it, saying: “It probably won’t be good tonight, but I’m hopeful it will be fine in the next few days.” It’s not quite Patrick Vieira v Roy Keane, but there’s definitely going to be some edge there. Silva doesn’t seem to me to be the kind who might try and defuse things with an apology, so let’s see how it plays out. And if he’s on the end of a Norwegian challenge tinged with retribution, I guess that’s just football. Erling Haaland, take out all your 114 frustration on a former teammate who, even if he’s on your side, is barely tolerable. You know you want to! Right, I’ll leave it there for now.
