Because who has the patience to do 6-click dance to open Office files in Google workspace

Wait 5 sec.

I don't have Microsoft 365 on my personal laptop. Every time someone sent me an xlsx, or an LLM generated a CSV, I had to do the same dance: open Drive, upload, wait, right-click, Open with Sheets. Picture me starting to lose interest in the file 😂 So I built Open in Google. It adds "Open in Google Sheets/Docs/Slides" to the Windows right-click menu for xlsx/xls/csv/docx/doc/pptx/ppt. One right click: it uploads the file to a folder in your Drive, converts it, and opens it in the browser. https://github.com/SwatiK425/open-in-google Some details for the curious: PowerShell plus a registry entry (HKCU, per-user, no admin needed) Google Drive API with drive.file scope, so it can only touch files it created itself OAuth tokens encrypted with Windows DPAPI, stored locally, nothing phones home Reopening the same file updates the Drive copy instead of duplicating it (keeps a local path-to-ID map) Renaming the file starts a fresh Drive copy. New name, new file. Limitations by design: edits you make in the browser don't sync back to your local disk, and setup takes about 10 minutes because you have to create your own Google OAuth credential (Google doesn't let any app touch Drive without one). The click-by-click setup is in the repo. Free. Genuinely appreciate any feedback. submitted by /u/swati425 [link] [comments]
