David Seaman was shocked Thomas Tuchel chose James Trafford ahead of Jordan Pickford against Spain, but supports the switch.The Everton goalkeeper was an unused substitute at Wembley as England were defeated 3-2 by the reigning world champions, with the same drill of Trafford starting and Pickford being benched happening for their second match where they face Czechia, live on talkSPORT.Trafford has only made three appearances for his countryTuchel explained that he felt Trafford deserved the opportunity following an impressive start to his Premier League campaign starring for new club Leeds United having joined them from Manchester City. The German revealed that he had planned to give both keepers two games each in the four-match run during the international break.Tuchel said: “I felt James deserved to get the two matches, that’s why we gave him two matches. He started the Premier League season well and is getting minutes as number one at Leeds.“Jordan [Pickford] did absolutely nothing wrong, but we wanted to use this competition to see how far actually James is.”The 32-year-old has been the undisputed first-choice for the Three Lions since he replaced Joe Hart in 2017, and has never been truly tested – until now.On talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs, Seaman said: “I was shocked, because we’re playing against the world champions, and you know it’s going to be a real test. It’s a bold decision to put Trafford in there.“I’ve always said that our back-up keepers have not got a lot of caps between them. If anything did happen to Jordan, then we would have been in trouble because his replacement would not have experience.“Technically, they would be brilliant but experience goes a long way. However, bringing in Trafford at Wembley against Spain was a real test for him and I thought he did brilliant.”A clash of goalkeeping stylesUnder Gareth Southgate, Pickford was unchallenged for his spot – a trend that initially looked set to continue under Tuchel after the former Sunderland keeper started every match during the summer tournament and the majority of World Cup qualifiers.However, Trafford grabbed his chance despite conceding three times in England’s last outing.None of Spain’s goals were down to bad keeping from TraffordGettyAgainst Spain, the 23-year-old showed his quality by making an impressive save to deny Ferran Torres in the first half, and the goals they conceded were not particularly down to the Leeds goalie.Notably, this marked the fifth occasion the Three Lions have conceded three or more goals in a fixture since 2022 – with Pickford failing to feature in any of those matches.Pickford has kept 46 clean sheets in his 91 appearances for England and has been a huge part of the Three Lions’ recent success at major tournaments.Yet Seaman believes healthy competition will elevate standards across the board, adding: “I do think Pickford will be back because he’s been brilliant for England.“He made some mistakes during the World Cup but you can count all of them on one hand since he started for England. But now it’s about getting a goalkeeper in there to challenge him because we’ve never seen anyone do that.“It’s good that Trafford is now getting experience in the Premier League playing for Leeds, I was happy with that signing when I saw it. With Trafford, you have someone who’s very calm, he’s a bit like myself. There was Peter Schmeichel and me. “There’s two completely different ways of being a keeper. It’s whatever gets the best out of you. Even at Arsenal, Arteta put David Raya in because he was a lot calmer than Aaron Ramsdale.“It’s down to whether Tuchel wants that calmness in goal, but it’s two games each and hopefully Trafford can keep a clean sheet.”Who is England’s No1?Trafford’s form this season has helped Leeds to fifth in the Premier League table with the former Burnley player keeping two clean sheets in the process.His lack of experience may be an issue having only played 32 top-flight games before moving to Leeds following his time at Burnley and Manchester City.Despite it being a frustrating campaign at the Etihad Stadium, Trafford did get experience and started both the FA Cup final and Carabao Cup final for City before his move to Leeds.While things are heating up for the youngster, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down for Pickford either as he has recently won the August Save of the Month award for a record-extending fifth time following his incredible stop against Crystal Palace.
