For many people considering dog adoption, meeting a rescue animal inside a busy shelter only gives them a small glimpse of what life together might actually look like. Philadelphia-area couple Hannah Vance and Alex Amentler got a different opportunity when they met a 2-year-old rescue dog and brought him home through an animal shelter sleepover program.Programs like this may have benefits far beyond giving shelter dogs a night away from their kennels. A study involving 27,901 dogs across 51 U.S. animal shelters found that dogs who experienced temporary fostering were over 14 times more likely to be adopted than euthanized, compared with dogs that didn’t participate in the intervention. For Hannah and Alex, however, the experiment became much more personal: their temporary shelter dog soon had a new name, Milton, and a permanent home.
