A simple addition at St Michael’s School is helping students discover a new way to communicate with one another.Speech therapist Lisa Abela set up a colourful sign language alphabet guide for students returning to school, giving children the chance to pick up different signs as they go about their everyday lessons.The chart displays the alphabet alongside the corresponding signs, making it easy for curious students to stop, look and try spelling out letters and names themselves.And it seems to already be catching on. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)“In my school we support many children who use different types of hearing devices and while sign language might not be their main form of communication, I wanted to show that all forms of communication are visible and valued, Lisa said to Lovin Malta.“Be it verbal, through sign, or through AAC. I hope the rest of the students will jump on board. Today I already saw a few trying to sign their names.”Lisa explained that the initiative is ultimately about making different ways of communicating more visible throughout the school.“Because communication is for everyone,” she wrote alongside a photo of the guide.“Making sure our school is a space where every voice, spoken or signed, is valued.”It may be just a chart, but it’s already encouraging students to learn something new while reinforcing an important message: there’s more than one way to communicate.Well done Lisa!•
