Edwards Lifesciences (EW) - Heart To Skip A BeatEdwards Lifesciences CorporationBATS:EWSmirnTradesEdwards makes artificial heart valves. Most of its money comes from TAVR, a valve that is fitted through a catheter with no open heart surgery and it has a near duopoly with Medtronic. With companies like this, trial results and regulatory announcements are what really drive price so with Earnings and TCT which is a heart technology conference both land at the end of October so we get everything at once. Looking at the chart, we're in a decent price squeeze inside a symmetrical triangle and a strong start to the week. If we buy into good news then a breakout from the triangle and reclaiming the Q3 open should leave price free to run to the long-term ceiling at $96-96.80. After that, the last hurdle is the monthly S/R at $100. If the trials look less promising, or there are regulatory hold ups the downside is clear. The yearly open is the key level to watch for a break and if it goes, the target is the Q2 open at $80.99. Worth mentioning we are likely to break before earnings or the announcements and "buy the rumor sell the news" is a real possibility. Price can run up into the event and then sell off even on good results just like we have covered on previous earnings and their effects. As long as we remain trading above the yearly open ($85.47) then I lean on the buyside of this playing out especially on a good earnings report and strong trial result announcements. Ran a valuation model on it and there is a blended intrinsic value of around $68 - $72 so currently trading on the premium side within the market however forward growth is optimistic if the above continues to play out.
