Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino feels cheated after an independent Premier League panel found Man City guilty of 114 breaches.In the period between 2009 and 2018, City have been found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s financial rules on 114 occasions, with the news set to have major repercussions on the English game.Tottenham are one of four clubs who served formal notices reserving their right to take legal action against City for the Champions League revenue they lost over several years.It has been suggested that Spurs could demand that City pay compensation of £200m for their infringements, while the Manchester club could be looking at legal claims as high as £800m in total from all their rivals.Photo by Omar Vega/Getty ImagesMauricio Pochettino questions why Tottenham were operating on different rules to othersEarlier this month, Pochettino claimed that Spurs should be given the 2016-17 Premier League title after Chelsea, who were the title winners that season, were charged by the Premier League for historical breaches of competition rules and were fined £10.75m.The former Tottenham boss is even more furious to learn that City have now been found guilty of 114 breaches at a time when Spurs were trying to compete with them and the Blues for the title.The Argentine questioned why the Premier League were so strict with Tottenham in ensuring they complied with the regulations while allowing their rivals to act with impunity.Pochettino told The Guardian: “Where were the controls? That’s what gets my attention. Where were the controls? If I remember being at Southampton, then Tottenham – I remember building [the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium] and not having the economic possibility of a transfer for 18 months. I think we were the only team in the history of the Premier League with 18 months without [making a transfer].“If a team like us, Tottenham, was fighting for titles with those above us and every year in the top four, getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League without being able to do a transfer for 18 months, all because we needed to get used to the [Premier League financial controls]? They were so strict with us but also so lenient with others. Because of that, that’s why I say: it’s all very strange.”Pochettino insists damage is already done to the Premier LeagueMany are now debating what sanctions City could get, including a major points deduction, relegation and being stripped of their trophies.However, Pochettino insists that no matter what the punishment is, the damage is already done, suggesting we lived through a major period of deception in the Premier League.The 54-year-old said: “Whatever punishment [they choose], it’s impossible to turn back time. It’s done a lot of damage, more than anything the guidelines. At the end of the day many clubs followed the rules and some didn’t. Maybe they thought that the punishment [wouldn’t come for a lot of years] – what are they going to do? An economic punishment? Docking points? It’s really hard.“It’s sad. It is a huge sadness. At the end of the day we get into a situation where what got celebrated wasn’t that real, what seemed good maybe wasn’t so good, what didn’t look good maybe was good but couldn’t be good because of what happened. At the end of the day, we went through something where sporting fairness didn’t exist.
