6 months building HousingPal, a zero-brokerage rental platform for Hyderabad: what worked, what didn't

Wait 5 sec.

Six months ago I started HousingPal as a solo founder with no audience, no budget, and a day job. Here's where it stands and what I learned. The problem: Renting in Hyderabad usually means paying a broker a month's rent for a listing you could have found yourself. I wanted tenants and owners to connect directly, with trust built in. Where we are today: ~1,000 visitors/month, all organic, no paid ads Ranking #1 for some of the key words on Google 5 to 10 organic listings per week from owners Launched a Buy/Sell section (apartments, villas, plots, agri land) Launched rental agreements (e-sign, e-stamp, and a hard copy mailed to you) What worked: Content-led SEO. I wrote about the problems people in Hyderabad were actually searching for. One post on land verification (Section 22A) became our biggest traffic source and now ranks at the top for its core keywords. Staying Hyderabad-only. Going narrow let us build real local depth instead of being a thin all-India clone. Trust features. Verified listings give people a reason to pick us over bigger platforms. What didn't I spent weeks making 80+ Instagram Reels (even automated pipelines). Follower growth was negligible. Instagram is now just a credibility layer, and SEO does the real work. Stack: Next.js, TypeScript, Supabase, built heavily with AI-assisted tools (Copilot, Claude Code). What's next: growing listing density. Questions for you: Anyone here monetized a local marketplace without ads early on? Link: www.housingpal.in I'd value honest feedback on the site. submitted by /u/ProofInvite6370 [link] [comments]
