Bill Reightler, a prominent Maryland horseman who operated Bill Reightler bloodstock for 27 years, passed away Tuesday after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a post from his daughter Betsy on social media.“It is with a heavy heart to tell you all that Bill Reightler passed away this morning after his battle with pancreatic cancer,” Betsy posted on Tuesday. “(Wife) Barrie Reightler and I cannot express enough how wonderful it has been for all of us to see what a loved and revered man he was. Thank you to everyone who has sent well wishes, visited, and kept him in your prayers. We are greateful his final days were peaceful, at home on the farm. He got to tell everyone how uch he loved them, and in true Bill Reightler fashion made sure eveything was taken care of for his girls. He has left behind a remarkable legacy and so many fond memories.”A native Marylander, Reightler worked in the Thoroughbred industry for over 45 years. He founded Bill Reightler Bloodstock in 1999, and over the past 20 years, established himself as one of the leading sales and bloodstock agents based in the Mid-Atlantic region.According to his website, after training horses at Mid-Atlantic tracks for 10 years, Bill worked at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, in the training, broodmare and stud divisions for five years. He then returned to Maryland to manage Ross Valley Farms (now Marathon Farms), where he built the farm and handled a top band of broodmares that included champions Heavenly Cause and Smart Angle. During his tenure at Ross Valley, he raised and prepped Houston (a $2.9 million sales yearling) and several stakes horses, including Two Punch.After five years at Ross Valley, Bill accepted a management position at Chanceland Farm. There he built the farm and helped establish it as a leading operation in the region.As a sales agent, his accomplishments include selling the 2021 Horse of the Year Knicks Go (whose mating he also planned); the 2003 Eclipse Champion Declan's Moon; owning and racing stakes winner Pagan Moon; and owning and selling Rockcide, a half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide, carrying in-utero multiple stakes winner Rule.
