Tottenham legend Chris Waddle does not buy that it is suddenly all roses at his former club under Roberto De Zerbi after two years of constant struggle.At the time when De Zerbi walked through the door and particularly after Tottenham lost his first game in charge away at Sunderland, it appeared as if relegation was inevitable for the North London club.However, despite missing many of their most important players and leaders through injury, the club managed to perform a great escape and stayed up on the final day of the season.The mood has been transformed around the club since then, mainly thanks to the signings that have been made this summer, but one former Tottenham legend believes that a serious inquest has still not been done at Hotspur Way.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramChris Waddle calls on ‘average and lethargic’ Tottenham squad to look in the mirrorSome are now predicting that Tottenham could now challenge for Champions League qualification under De Zerbi despite finishing 17th for two seasons in a row.However, Waddle insisted that what has gone on for the last two years at the club is unacceptable, and questioned why the players suddenly decided to turn it on after the Italian walked through the door.The Tottenham legend told OLGB: “Honesty is needed at Spurs – what on earth have the players been doing for two years? Let’s be honest, for the previous two years, or 18 months, what have they actually been doing? It was those last seven games that kept them up. The year before, they won the Europa League but then nearly got relegated.“Suddenly, a new manager comes in for those final seven games, and all of a sudden, they’re running their socks off. What have they been doing for the last two years? If they were that good, Tottenham would have taken the option to sign them. It’s fine to say they stayed up, but that was just seven games. What have they been doing for the last 18 months?“So nobody at the club had any reason to complain about being moved on. For two years, nobody performed consistently, and there was no excuse for any player. I watched the Tottenham team for nine months, and frankly, they were average and lethargic.“Then, all of a sudden, with seven games to go, they became a team that could challenge the top six. So why did they switch on then and not perform for 18 months? You’ve got to look at the players’ mentality. I think De Zerbi’s gone in there and he’s gotten into them and is getting the hard work and shift out of them.”Waddle says Spurs made a mistake not signing Joao PalhinhaTottenham have chosen not to re-sign Joao Palhinha, even though the club may have been relegated if not for the Portuguese star’s heroics last season.Waddle believes that Spurs made an error by not re-signing the 30-year-old after the impact he made on loan.The 65-year-old added: “Unfortunately, that potential hasn’t been enough because they haven’t performed consistently for the last two years. I don’t know what that’s about, they should have looked at Joao Palhinha. Everyone was praising Palhinha towards the end of the season when De Zerbi took over, he really started running.
