Tottenham’s Djed Spence has revealed a funny incident from his youth football days that proved pivotal to him eventually making it as a professional footballer at the highest level. The Tottenham right-back has gone from a maligned figure to one of the most popular men in the country over the course of the last month, owing to his outstanding performances at the World Cup.He has demonstrated exactly why Thomas Tuchel was keen to take him to the World Cup even though he was not a starter for Tottenham last season when Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro were fit.The full-back displayed his immense self-belief both on and off the pitch, despite being targeted by the media earlier in the tournament.Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty ImagesTottenham’s Djed Spence reveals how he signed for the team that beat his youth side 12-0Sky Sports journalist Sophy Ridge has been digging into Spence’s past and has discovered a lovely story, where the full-back explains how his mother helped him join a youth side called Junior Elite. The Tottenham man explained that his side, Peckham Town, had just lost 12-0 to Junior Elite, and he and his mother then hid in the bushes to avoid his coach and teammates, and to meet and sign for the opposition after the game.Spence told England FA’s official website earlier this summer (as relayed by Ridge on X): “When I was at Peckham Town, we travelled all the way down to Croydon to play a team called Junior Elite. I think it was snowing and sleet and everything was bad. My mum always knew I had potential. We ended up going to Junior Elite and losing 11-0 or 12-0 and my mum liked the team. She said, ‘this team is good who we just played, you know’.“They had good structure and they played good football. Everyone was going home and she said, ‘just wait there on the side’. Some people are still around from Peckham Town like the coach – so my mum took me and we hid in the bushes. It’s so funny because I remember it like yesterday.“We hid in the bushes, waiting for everyone to go and everyone’s leaving and when it was all clear, my mum said, ‘come on, let’s go’. She spoke to one of the coaches and she said, ‘I want my son to play for you lot’. They had a conversation, and they said, ‘bring him down and he’ll go on trial’. I ended up doing a trial and I signed for Junior Elite, so that was the story.”Spurs’ asking price for Spence is likely to have gone up considerablyIt has been widely reported that Tottenham and Inter Milan are locked in talks over a deal for Spence, with the Lilywhites open to cashing in on the 25-year-old.Some sources from Italy have claimed that the Nerazzurri can land the Spurs full-back for £30m this summer. However, given the World Cup Spence has just had, it would be extremely surprising if Tottenham settled for such a modest fee for the defender.READ MORE: ‘Sounds crazy’ – Tim Sherwood makes bold Tottenham prediction, and one striker ‘might be the answer’The post How losing 12-0 and hiding in a bush led to Djed Spence’s rise at Tottenham and England appeared first on Spurs Web.
