Atlanta man in France gets locked out of hotel room. But allegedly receptionist could only offer a meltdown: ‘You scared me! Please go back’

You’d expect that any confusion on a vacation abroad would be culture or language-related.  However, one Atlanta lawyer, Cody (@atlcody), just found himself flabbergasted after a confrontation over a basic service. While staying at the Hôtel Vacances Bleues Provinces Opéra in France, he realized he had locked himself out. Then a request for a working room key spiraled into an alleged chaotic customer service ordeal that already has 3.7 million views.  Taking to TikTok, Cody began his story in the Parisian hotel lobby, a hotel he had booked through Expedia. He explained that he had accidentally left his room key inside his room, so he went to the front desk to ask for assistance. The receptionist provided a new key, but when Cody returned to his floor and tried to use it, the lock flashed red.  So, Cody noted that he went back downstairs to report the issue, which is when things allegedly took a bizarre turn. According to Cody, the receptionist insisted the key worked fine. When Cody explained it was blinking red, the employee suggested that Cody was drunk or on the wrong floor. As Cody allegedly found himself in an argument, he asked for the employee’s name.  Cody claimed it led to a crash-out Now, we should note that this is Cody’s perspective. While we do see the employee in other videos, the narrative is still framed, edited, and narrated by Cody. We do not have the employee’s perspective or confirmation.  When Cody asked for the name, the receptionist allegedly refused to provide it. Cody claimed it led to an outburst:: “He goes, you know what? I quit this f—ing job. I f— you, I f— you, I f— everybody, f— everything I do.” Cody said that he asked him to calm down and to clarify the problem. He alleged the receptionist responded with, “I make you a key, and you are rude. I am not a slave” @atlcody Hey @expedia ♬ original sound – Cody Things got even more tense when the employee began speaking about Cody in French to another person in the lobby. Cody, who understood what was being said, felt it was highly inappropriate. The interaction allegedly ended with the employee running into a bathroom to cry, then retreating to an employee-only area. He finally got a key after waiting, but it didn’t work. In a follow-up video, Cody shared clips from his third attempt to get a functional key. During this encounter, the concierge was on the phone and can be seen alternating between aggressive and defensive body language. When Cody approached, the employee shouted, “Stop yelling at me, please, sir,” and claimed, “You scared me! You scared me! Please go back in your room.”  The irony, as Cody pointed out, was that he was only there because he was locked out of his room. Cody claimed that the employee eventually marched upstairs to show him how to use the lock. However, Cody claimed that the receptionist used a master key to open the door and then walked away before Cody could actually enter. In a different case, when he got to his hotel, a blind Australian didn’t find any staff to help him to his room. @atlcody Replying to @Acornacopial Hey @expedia this happened to me at Hôtel Vacances Bleues Provinces Opéra yall wanna help out? ♬ original sound – Cody When Cody asked the concierge, “Does the key work?” he can be seen cursing at him. He threw the key and, according to Cody, spat on him. The employee then stormed off, leading Cody to chase him back to the lobby. The hotel staffer eventually agreed to let Cody into the room, allegedly on the condition that he not leave. Interestingly, housekeeping at an Orlando hotel emptied a room while the customer was out. Cody later shared a third update that he translated the concierge’s call and points to it. He claims that the employee admitted on the phone that the door’s lock was running low on battery. So, Cody questioned why he was held at fault. He also questioned why the door opened for the concierge’s master key. In the comments, a TikToker claimed to have worked in hotel maintenance. They wrote, “the light blinking red [in the door lock] means the battery for the lock is about to die and will only have enough charge for a few more times. so customer keys won’t work but his master key over rides this for safety reasons.” @atlcody Replying to @Shannanaghans #greenscreen ♬ original sound – Cody TikTok was shocked. One user commented, “This is literally the most French experience you could possibly have,” while another noted, “Had you not documented this, there’s NO WAY anyone would have believed this. holy cow.” Another viewer pointed out that “an employee in France cannot legally spit on a customer. Spitting constitutes ‘violence légère’ (minor assault) and ‘harcèlement’ or ‘outrage’ under French law.” Cody noted that he was going to call Expedia the next day. An update on the whole incident is still awaited.
