The Nationalist Party has called for a national carrying-capacity plan to determine how much Malta can sustainably handle, warning that repeated power cuts are damaging the country’s tourism industry.Speaking today, PN deputy leader and tourism spokesperson Alex Perici Calascione said the recent blackout that forced tourists to leave a Valletta hotel and spend the night on nearby rocks highlighted the consequences of overstretched infrastructure.He said the hotel was left without air conditioning, while some electronic room doors stopped working, leaving guests stranded.Perici Calascione noted that the government is now forecasting 4.5 million tourists this year, a figure previously projected for 2035, arguing that growth has far outpaced investment in essential infrastructure.He called for a national carrying-capacity plan assessing what Malta can sustainably accommodate across sectors, including tourism, both now and in the years ahead.“The time for fine words is over,” he said, insisting that repeated power cuts are harming tourists, residents and businesses alike.Can Malta really cope with 4.5 million tourists a year?•
