FDS: A Quality Compounder Down 50% — Opportunity or Value Trap?FactSet Research Systems Inc.BATS:FDSstouflacrucoFactSet Research Systems ( FDS ) has suffered one of the sharpest drawdowns in its history, falling from nearly $500 to around $220 before beginning to recover. My Master Buy Scanner V2 has now generated a full 3/3 BUY signal on the monthly timeframe—but the interesting part is not simply the signal. It is the combination of business quality, valuation reset and improving technical conditions. A BUY signal does not mean “buy at any price.” After the latest rebound, the scanner currently says WAIT FOR PULLBACK and suggests starting with only 25% of a full position. WHY FDS CAUGHT MY ATTENTION A genuinely high-quality business FactSet operates a deeply embedded subscription platform used across institutional asset management, banking and wealth management. Its latest reported figures remain impressive: • Organic ASV growth: 7.1% • ASV retention: above 95% • More than 9,000 clients • 45+ consecutive years of revenue growth • 29 consecutive years of EPS growth • 27 consecutive years of dividend growth This is not a distressed or structurally unprofitable company. It is a historically exceptional compounder undergoing a major valuation reset. Valuation has normalized The scanner gives FDS a 7/7 valuation and debt score: • Cash yield: 7.69% • Cash-flow multiple: 16.43x • Earnings multiple: 16.76x • Debt-to-equity: 0.77 Those levels are significantly more attractive than the premium valuation historically attached to the company. Growth has not disappeared The scanner still identifies a positive long-term outlook: • Expected profit growth: 9.8% • Three-year profit growth: 14.93% • Three-year sales growth: 7.98% FactSet also reported that clients adopting its AI products are growing ASV faster than non-AI clients. AI could threaten traditional financial-data platforms—but it could also reinforce the value of trusted, structured and proprietary data. THE TECHNICAL SETUP The monthly chart is attempting to form a base after a capitulation-style decline. Key areas I am watching: • $220–230: first accumulation/support zone • Around $200: major structural support and risk level • $270–285: first important resistance and confirmation zone • Above $300: stronger evidence that a long-term reversal is developing The monthly candle has already rebounded strongly, so I would rather wait for a controlled pullback or a confirmed break above resistance than chase the initial move. THE BEAR CASE The setup is not risk-free: • Adjusted operating margin fell to 34.0% from 36.8% year over year • GAAP EPS declined during the latest quarter • AI-native competitors may put pressure on pricing and traditional workflows • A quality company can remain undervalued if its historical multiple was simply too high • Losing the $200 area would materially weaken the bottoming thesis MY CURRENT PLAN This is a long-term watchlist and gradual-accumulation idea—not a short-term momentum trade. I would consider: • A small starter position on a constructive pullback • Adding if the $220 area holds • Increasing exposure after a convincing monthly recovery above $280–300 • Reassessing the thesis if price loses the $200 structural zone FDS now presents a fascinating question: Is the market offering a rare opportunity to buy a durable financial-data compounder at a normalized valuation—or is AI permanently reducing the value of its competitive moat?
