From farmers using mobile applications to monitor weather patterns and market prices to entrepreneurs generating content with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools and health workers using intelligent systems to improve disease diagnosis, AI is increasingly becoming part of everyday life in Uganda.The growing adoption of platforms developed by American technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon Web Services (AWS), OpenAI, Adobe and Anthropic is accelerating the country’s digital transformation while helping build a new generation of digitally skilled workers.The trend comes as Uganda pursues an ambitious target of creating one million AI-centred jobs and equipping three million people with AI skills by 2030.Industry experts believe the target is attainable if the country strategically leverages global technology partnerships while investing in local innovation, infrastructure and talent development.Nesta Paul Katende, founder and Group CEO of Otic Group, describes AI as one of the greatest economic opportunities Uganda has seen in decades.“The targets Uganda has set for itself are ambitious, but they are achievable if we think big and work together,” Katende says.“Artificial Intelligence is quickly becoming a basic workplace skill, much like computer literacy became twenty years ago. The second opportunity is innovation. The third opportunity is jobs. AI is creating entirely new categories of work, and I believe AI is not just a technology opportunity for Uganda. It is an economic opportunity.”AI in everyday lifeAcross Uganda, AI-powered technologies are reshaping how people work, learn, communicate and access essential services. Students are using Google Search, YouTube and AI-assisted learning platforms to access educational materials that were previously difficult to obtain, while teachers are increasingly relying on digital tools to prepare lessons and create learning content more efficiently.Businesses, meanwhile, are adopting AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve customer engagement and boost productivity. According to digital transformation expert Faizal Muhumuza, American technology companies have become deeply embedded in Uganda’s digital ecosystem.“American technology companies have pushed Uganda forward in a big way,” Muhumuza says.“Today, a student in Mbarara uses Google for research, a trader in Kikuubo sells through Facebook and WhatsApp, a school or bank in Wakiso uses Microsoft Teams for collaborative learning and working, and a young filmmaker in Kampala studies Netflix productions to understand global standards.”He says these platforms have lowered barriers to information, communication and business growth.Google’s ecosystem, for example, has expanded access to education, entrepreneurship and digital inclusion. Schools use Google Classroom to facilitate learning, small businesses improve their visibility through Google Maps, while young people acquire practical digital skills through YouTube tutorials.“A school in Masaka can use Google Classroom to help learners and teachers study better. A small business in Ntungamo can appear on Google Maps. A youth in Gulu can learn coding from YouTube,” Muhumuza explains.Transforming healthcareOne of AI’s most significant impacts is being felt in the healthcare sector, where intelligent technologies are improving disease diagnosis, surveillance and patient management.U.S.-based company MinXray is deploying AI-assisted diagnostic systems that help health workers detect tuberculosis faster and more accurately, particularly in rural communities with limited access to specialist healthcare.AI is also strengthening disease surveillance. More than 100 Ugandan scientists have been trained to use advanced AI-powered disease monitoring systems developed through international partnerships.Healthcare experts say such innovations can improve health outcomes through earlier diagnosis, reduced treatment delays and more data-driven decision-making.Muhumuza says AI can also help health facilities manage patient records, predict medicine shortages and improve follow-up care.“Healthcare facilities can utilise AI to optimise patient record management, anticipate pharmaceutical shortages and enhance diagnostic accuracy,” he says.Boosting agricultureAgriculture, Uganda’s largest employer, is also benefiting from AI technologies. Through AI-powered applications, farmers can monitor pest infestations, receive weather forecasts, track commodity prices and make more informed planting decisions, helping them improve productivity and reduce losses.Creating new jobsBeyond improving productivity, AI is creating entirely new employment opportunities. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), digital content creation, data annotation, AI training, software development, cloud computing, cybersecurity and digital marketing are among the emerging sectors expected to generate thousands of jobs.Katende believes Uganda has the potential to become a leading destination for AI-enabled services in Africa.“I believe BPO could become one of Uganda’s biggest job creation opportunities over the next decade,” he says.“AI is changing the industry, and the jobs of tomorrow will combine human talent and AI capability. If Uganda invests in the right skills and partnerships, we can become a leading destination for AI-enabled services in Africa.”The growing popularity of platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, TikTok and Facebook is also creating new income streams for content creators, musicians, influencers and digital entrepreneurs.Young Ugandans are increasingly building businesses around digital content production, online education and marketing using AI-powered tools.Investing in skillsExperts agree that Uganda’s ability to fully benefit from AI will largely depend on investment in skills development. Katende argues that AI education should extend beyond engineers and computer scientists.“One lesson stands out above all others: invest in people before you need them,” he says.“Technology is only as powerful as the people using it. AI education should not be reserved for engineers and computer scientists. The future will belong to people who know how to work alongside AI effectively.”Muhumuza shares a similar view, arguing that technology alone cannot transform institutions.“A laptop does not transform an office if the mindset is still manual,” he says.He says Uganda must invest more in training, awareness, change management and technical support to maximise the benefits of digital technologies.Building Uganda’s AI ecosystemWhile both experts acknowledge the contribution of global technology companies, they emphasise that Uganda must also build its own AI ecosystem. Muhumuza cautions against becoming merely a consumer of foreign technologies.“We should not remain a supermarket for foreign technology,” he says. “We should become a workshop where Ugandan products are built, tested, improved and exported.”He argues that Uganda should invest in local AI models, local-language datasets, research institutions, startup financing and affordable internet connectivity. Katende echoes the call for greater collaboration among universities, startups, researchers, government agencies and technology companies.“Africa must move from being a user of technology to becoming a creator of technology,” he says.“Our universities, startups and researchers should build solutions grounded in African realities.”He adds:“My hope is that Uganda does not simply participate in the AI revolution. It helps lead it.”AI regulation and governanceAs AI adoption accelerates, Uganda is also strengthening its regulatory framework to promote responsible deployment of the technology.The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has established an AI Taskforce to develop guidelines on AI ethics, data governance, algorithmic transparency and risk management. Although Uganda is yet to enact standalone AI legislation, existing consumer protection, broadcasting and data privacy laws are being applied to AI-powered services.Meanwhile, the ministry of ICT and National Guidance is finalising a National AI Strategy that is expected to introduce risk-based regulation, ethical safeguards and human oversight, laying the foundation for a secure and trusted AI ecosystem that supports innovation, job creation and the country’s broader digital transformation.The post AI platforms accelerating Uganda’s digital transformation appeared first on The Observer Media Ltd.
