Enemalta’s works on improving the island’s power distribution network need to be significantly accelerated as soon as possible, Prime Minister Robert Abela has reiterated to its highest officials.While stressing that €160 million has already been spent in the past three years on Malta’s power grid, Abela went on to say that the level of investment and work needed is very large, and clearly, not enough has been done yet.All across the island at many points last week, localities suffered hours-long power cuts, with some even going entire days without electricity as temperatures soared past 40 on consecutive mornings.“I’ve already discussed this with the highest officials of Enemalta and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli,” Abela told a One News interviewer earlier this afternoon. “The rate at which the works were being done needs to be accelerated. What happened in the last couple of days is inexcusable.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)“The clear commitment which I’m giving again today and the clear direction I’ve given Enemalta is that I’m expecting from them an acceleration of the rate of infrastructure works on the strengthening of the distribution system,” Abela repeated. “As early as this week, the works we’ve done need to increase, greatly.”Abela said this needs to be done because, due to climate change, a repetition of last week’s heatwave will inevitably happen again, and might even last longer or bring even higher temperatures to the islands. “Libya, 200 miles away, had 48 degrees,” he continued. “It can easily hit our country too, in August, or next year.
