Enemalta says its engineers, technicians and contractors have been working 24/7 to restore electricity to affected localities after record-breaking demand during Malta’s ongoing heatwave placed unprecedented pressure on parts of the country’s distribution network. In a press release issued today, the company said technical teams worked throughout the night repairing multiple cable faults and restoring power, while also providing alternative electricity supplies where possible to minimise disruption.According to Enemalta, electricity has already been restored in Birkirkara, Balzan, Lija, Iklin, Xemxija and Mellieħa, with crews now focusing their efforts on parts of Cottonera, Kalkara, Fgura and Żabbar, where repair works are still underway. The company also revealed that Malta reached a record electricity demand of 713MW yesterday, surpassing the previous peak of 663MW recorded in 2023.Enemalta Executive Chairperson Inġ. Ryan Fava said every available resource has been mobilised to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible.“Our teams have been working continuously to restore electricity to affected customers, and they will remain on site until these works are completed,” he said, thanking the public for its patience during the outages.Fava added that Enemalta has enough electricity generation capacity to meet demand, but said the combination of prolonged extreme temperatures and unprecedented electricity consumption placed extraordinary pressure on parts of the distribution network. The company said areas where network reinforcement works have already been completed performed well despite the record demand, adding that these upgrades form part of its nine-year investment programme aimed at strengthening and future-proofing Malta’s electricity grid.Enemalta said a 24-hour helpline (153) remains available to the public and stressed that restoring power to all affected customers as quickly as possible remains its top priority.•
