We finally have some details on the upcoming Star Trek movie that's been touted as the franchise's grand return to theaters after a decade away. Writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend to share an outline of what they've been working on. Thanks to this update, Trekkies now have some vague idea about the movie's characters and setting.Star Trek Will Not Rely On Past Characters For Its Upcoming MovieDaley and Goldstein were panelists for Collider's Director's On Directing panel, and confirmed that their script for the unnamed Star Trek movie is still a work in progress. Given that, fans likely won't see the film until far beyond the 2026 movie schedule. It was previously revealed that Daley and Goldstein's movie would not take place in the Kelvin timeline, but that was about all we knew. Now, we have confirmation from Goldstein that the movie will feature an original cast of characters, which defies the trend we'd seen in past movies. What's worth mentioning is that even the Kelvin timeline brought in Leonard Nimoy's Spock. So I'm intrigued to see how this film progresses with a group of fresh faces. I also question how Star Trek fans will respond. Thus far, the most successful TV shows have thrived by leaning on nostalgia and familiarity. It's strange to hear the hard pivot for the franchise in this new direction, especially when just a couple of years ago, Patrick Stewart claimed a Picard-led movie was in the works. So who will be the new stars, and will this story be centered around Starfleet? Those questions remain unanswered. The Movie Is Set In The Far Future, For One Big ReasonJonathan Goldstein also confirmed that the new Star Trek movie would be set in the future, perhaps further than we've ever seen. Here's what Goldstein had to say about that, specifically: Everything we take on, what draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin on something that you've seen done before, and that's our hope with this is to satisfy the fans, but also bring people in who may not consider themselves lovers of Star Trek, and surprise them.With unfamiliar characters and a new timeline, the motive behind the new Star Trek movie are clear. The goal is to create a new entry point for the mainstream, and hopefully ,one that the diehard (but dying) fandom can support as well. It's a bold gambit, but they have the creatives who brought Spider-Man back to audiences writing the script. Star Trek is clearly on the cusp of a new chapter, with zero shows in active development as it continues to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Season 4 of Strange New Worlds is currently airing and is streamable for those with a Paramount+ subscription, with a final abbreviated season scheduled for a later date. Then there's one final season of Starfleet Academy, which was greenlit before its cancellation.This upcoming movie could tell us a lot about Paramount+'s future direction for Star Trek as a whole, though we don't know that for sure. Obviously, there's going to be effort on the film side to draw in new fans, so I'm curious to see if that will be happening on the streaming side as well with shows.
