Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala joins NSS in opposing aided school recruitment proposal - The HinduUpdated - July 27, 2026 07:15 pm IST - KOTTAYAMThe Kerala government’s proposal to make temporary appointments in aided schools through the Employment Exchange has sparked wider opposition, with the Syro-Malabar Church joining the Nair Service Society (NSS) in opposing the move.In a statement, the Syro-Malabar Public Affairs Commission has described the proposed appointment mechanism as `unacceptable’ as it violated the constitutional rights of minority institutions and undermined the autonomy of aided school managements. It further pointed out that aided school managements, including those run by Christian minorities, share the government’s responsibility of ensuring access to quality education.“However, the Director of General Education’s decision to mandate that temporary and daily wage appointments be made through the Employment Exchange undermines the rights of school managements. This proposal, which is contrary to the constitutional rights guaranteed to minority institutions, cannot be accepted,” the statement said.The Commission referred to a circular issued by the Regional Deputy Director of General Education, Kannur, on July 15, directing that temporary and daily wage appointments to teaching and non-teaching posts in aided schools be made from lists supplied by the Employment Exchange. The circular cites a communication issued by the Director of General Education on June 27, 2026, as the basis for the directive.Maintaining that the move curtails the constitutional rights of minority institutions and erodes the functional autonomy of aided school managements, the church has urged the State government to recognise the seriousness of the issue and withdraw the Director of General Education’s decision along with all related proceedings.Published - July 27, 2026 07:12 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
