In 1939, Philadelphia lawyer Gilbert Kraus and his wife Eleanor undertook an extraordinary rescue mission that saved 50 Jewish children from Nazi-controlled Europe. At a time when most Americans opposed admitting refugee children, the couple worked with Brith Sholom to secure visas, gather financial support and bring the children safely to the United States.
