Classic winners Bow Echo (Night Of Thunder) and Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) headline 12 confirmations for the £1.5-million Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday, with the outstanding three-year-old milers on course to meet for a third time this season in Europe's richest mile race.The unbeaten Bow Echo has emerged victorious from both of their previous encounters, first when winning the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and then when following up in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The son of Night Of Thunder will be attempting to become the first colt since Frankel in 2011 to complete the 2,000 Guineas/St James's Palace/Sussex treble, with Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Gstaad perhaps likely to pose the biggest threat once again, having closed the gap to just a short head when the pair met at Royal Ascot.The Group 1-winning juveniles Puerto Rico (Wootton Bassett) and Zavateri (Without Parole) also feature in the potential three-year-old challenge, along with a third possible runner for Aidan O'Brien in Dorset (Wootton Bassett), a stablemate of Gstaad and Puerto Rico.Meanwhile, the seven-strong contingent of older horses is spearheaded by Charlie Appleby's Opera Ballo (Ghaiyyath), who was last seen finishing third behind Ten Bob Tony (Night Of Thunder) in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes.Ten Bob Tony also features among the Sussex confirmations as he tries to prove that his 50-1 win at Royal Ascot wasn't a fluke, while last year's Queen Anne hero, Docklands (Massaat), is another in line for a rematch, having finished seventh when trying to defend his crown. Harry Eustace's stable star then returned to Ascot to finish sixth in the G2 Summer Mile, three places behind Hugo Palmer's Sussex contender, Seagulls Eleven (Galileo Gold).The list of confirmations is completed by Lake Forest (No Nay Never), Never So Brave (No Nay Never) and Qirat (Showcasing), all of whom also have the option of running in Tuesday's G2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes.Qirat, of course, caused a huge upset when beating Rosallion to win last year's Sussex at odds of 150-1. Having rediscovered the winning thread with a defeat of Never So Brave in the G3 Criterion Stakes at York last time, the son of Showcasing is reported to be on course for a return to Goodwood next week, with Barry Mahon, European racing manager for Juddmonte, not ruling out the prospect of the homebred running twice in as many days.“Qirat will be our flagbearer for the week and loves it round Goodwood,” said Mahon. “I wouldn't actually rule him out running in both the Lennox and the Sussex Stakes next week. He's an older horse now who takes his racing well.“He probably wasn't fully fit for his first run of the year and then the ground was horrible at Epsom next time. But, with a couple of runs under his belt and back to a nice surface at York last time, he was back to his peak.
