What if Gyms stopped giving free PokéCoins? Pokémon Go survey has players concerned over the future of Gyms

Wait 5 sec.

Pokémon Go’s Gyms have long been a staple, and the fact that they give players the chance to earn free PokéCoins motivates many players to keep interacting with them. But a newly found survey has fans of the mobile game thinking all that could soon change. Players first highlighted the survey yesterday on the TheSilphRoad and PokemonGo subreddits. The survey, which can be found on the Niantic Labs website, seemingly aims to get a better understanding of the way players engage with Pokémon Go’s Gym system. Most of the questions are fairly simple, asking how many Gyms are accessible within walking distance or how often users engage with Gyms. But question 21 has fans worried. “If you could no longer earn PokéCoins from Gyms, how would that affect your Gym interactions?” The answer choices range from stopping Gym interaction entirely to interacting with Gyms more. Why the removal of free in-game currency would encourage someone to interact with Gyms more is beyond me, but hey, they gotta include it, I guess. The survey sparked debate online, with most players saying they would stop playing entirely if the free coins were removed from the game. Other players, however, said the Gym system needs a rework regardless and that there should be additional ways for players to earn coins to accommodate players in rural areas that lack an abundance of gyms. “Potentially they could rework the 50 coins per day into something more reliable, and rural friendly, like a daily mission to catch 50 for 50 Coins,” one player on Reddit wrote. Scopely is thinking of removing the 50 coins a day from the gyms. byu/nintendo101 inTheSilphRoad As it currently stands, players can receive up to 50 PokéCoins daily when their Pokémon are booted from a gym. The rate at which coins are awarded is one coin for every 10 minutes the Pokémon spent in the Gym, meaning that creature had to defend the gym for eight hours and 20 minutes to get the full daily amount.  It isn’t always easy to reach that time without players from other teams knocking your Pokémon out, but if you live in urban areas, you can usually find enough Gyms to increase your odds. If you’re a player in a rural area with fewer gyms, however, then it’s much more difficult to get free coins at all. PokéCoins can be used to unlock new costumes for your in-game avatar, purchase additional Raid Passes that allow you to participate in the game’s multiplayer battling system, or buy other items that grant you buffs to Stardust income or experience boosts. Though you don’t need PokéCoins to enjoy the game’s core gameplay system, coins definitely allow you to experience more of the game outside of daily restrictions. Fifty PokéCoins isn’t a lot, considering almost all of the items in the game’s store cost more than that. But if you play daily and are constantly interacting with Gyms, then you can gradually stack your coin income over several days. For many people, the free allotment is the only way they will be able to afford PokéCoins at all. The current Gym system also encourages more players to engage with one of the game’s multiplayer systems, which makes for a richer experience for the rest of the playerbase. In the game’s current event, players can spin PokéStops for research tasks that would award 10 coins if they caught 100 Pokémon. Additionally, you could earn coins from the free track of several battle passes. These alternative means for getting free coins may keep players in the game if the Gym system stopped handing them out. What the incentive would be to keep players engaging with the system, though, is still up in the air. You can take the survey now on Niantic Labs’ website and tell the developers what you think of Pokémon Go’s Gyms.0The post What if Gyms stopped giving free PokéCoins?
