There have been plenty of disagreements amongst The View’s co-hosts — just turn on any weekday episode on the 2026 TV schedule, and you’re likely to find one — but some skirmishes over the years live in infamy. The on-air argument between Rosie O’Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck is one of those, but while O’Donnell said she sometimes revisits that 2007 episode, there’s a different interview that she “can’t watch” back.Rosie O’Donnell did two stints on The View, each lasting less than a year. The first ended in 2007 after she and Elisabeth Hasselbeck — who were friends despite their different political leanings — got into an argument about the Iraq War. The comedienne recalled to People: Listen, it’s known that me and Elisabeth Hasselbeck did not have a great ending to our friendship, so I would say that was the most problematic, perhaps. But we did get along right up until the end, and then it blew up on national TV. Sometimes I watch that one.Rosie O’Donnell has looked back on the feud before, saying that she and Elisabeth Hasselbeck would go to Broadway shows together, and they visited the sets of kids TV shows with their children. That all apparently changed one day on The View, when an argument related to American troops in Iraq turned personal between the two.Two days later Rosie O’Donnell requested and was granted an early release from her contract, and she left the show.It’s a bit funny to me that the A League of Their Own actress can watch back the argument that ruined a friendship, but not the episode of The Rosie O’Donnell show in which she met her idol, Barbra Streisand. That happened two years later, in 2009, and O’Donnell said it still makes her cry:I can’t watch the Streisand one. But if the Elisabeth Hasselbeck fight is on, I’m like, ‘Let me try to remember what this felt like.’ You know?Rosie O’Donnell’s mother, who died when Rosie was 10, had loved Barbra Streisand, and Rosie carried on that fandom. When the Funny Girl star walked onto the talk show set, O’Donnell reportedly burst into tears, saying it felt like her mother had come back to life.That’s got me tearing up, so yeah, I can see why Rosie O’Donnell would avoid stirring up all that emotion.The View stuff, however, doesn’t seem to affect her the same way. A few years ago she said the ABC daytime talk show was “not something that I would ever do again,” but now her stance on a possible return has softened a bit, as she told People:Next season is the 30th anniversary and Ana Navarro mentioned that when I did her podcast recently. I think that I would, and just be a guest. Maybe she’d want to keep the subject matter lighter, though, to avoid any repeats of that 2007 skirmish, because she added:I do think that for me, it’s not the best use of my time or talent to be arguing about politics with people, just in general, as a form of entertainment. It’s not where I shine the most.Elisabeth Hasselbeck, meanwhile, has returned a few times since she was fired from The View in 2013. Her most recent appearance was this year, in fact, as she helped to fill in for Alyssa Farah Griffin during Griffin’s maternity leave.Will we ever see Rosie O’Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck share the stage again?
