In the New York, she inherited an easy lead on very firm turf–the sole time she's been a pacesetter–and her 98 Beyer was a career top. In the Diana, she was pulled from a tight spot early and tossed her head in protest, still got the jump on stablemate Kathynmarissa (below) at the quarter pole yet was outfinished.5. J-John Velazquez.Weaver aborted plans to send the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf star to Royal Ascot when she wasn't training to expectations, and this backup plan proved the right spot. Velazquez was shuffled back into the rail pocket a half-mile out but preferred to stalk anyway, and the 1-to-2 favorite quickly reeled in Sapphire Beach when swung around her at the eighth pole. The target is the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint; Cy Fair has already beaten males twice, and Shisospicy proved last fall that a 3-year-old filly can win it.Cy Fair | Janet Napolitano4. J-John Velazquez.This powerful performance stamped Luster as the favorite for the Aug. 15 King's Plate, which has gone to a filly on 39 occasions in 166 runnings and six of the last 11 years. The odds-on favorite seemed to barely work up a sweat en route to a personal-high Beyer and fourth win in five starts. Co-breeder Sugrim bought the dam for only $5,000. Gainesway's Anthony Beck bought Luster for $80,000 and included close friend Rosen as a partner, which also brings serendipity: Rosen's father, Carl, owned 1984 2-year-old champ Chief's Crown, who appears four generations back in Luster's family tree.3. J-Dylan Davis.Perhaps Segesta is better with a target, but she got away with seemingly easy fractions (although the rain makes that tougher to judge), finished in :23.53, turned in her usual speed figure and “ran her 'A' game” according to Davis–but couldn't kick quite as hard as barnmate Kathynmarissa (below). She may not be a candidate for longer distances but at eight to nine furlongs, the two-time Gr. I winner is remarkably steady and always a tough out.Kathynmarissa | Janet Napolitano2. Trip and pace cost her in the New York (Gr. I), and she fanned widest into the stretch here, but roared home in :22.98 to run past early leader Segesta (above). She gave Brown his 11th Diana win and 10th in an 11-year stretch, during which he trained at least two of the top three finishers on all 10 occasions. This was the third time Brown trainees have been 1-2-3 in the Diana.1. SPLENDORA, MTH, 7/18, Molly Pitcher Stakes (Gr. J-Flavien Prat.Baffert likely wouldn't have shipped to Monmouth if she had been based at Santa Anita and not Churchill Downs; his only previous Molly Pitcher starter, runnerup Silverbulletday 26 years ago, was also Churchill-based at the time. And despite Splendora's wire-to-wire 5 1/2-length score at 3-10 odds, Baffert wasn't optimistic when heavy rain hit. “I almost didn't run her” he said. “She does not like to get her feet wet. She's funny about that.” Regardless, her 100 Beyer matched her previous tops in the Beholder Mile (Gr. I) and Tranquility Lake Stakes.
