Fresh off her first Grade I victory in this weekend's Haskell Stakes, trainer Lindsay Schultz joined the TDN Writers' Room, presented by Keeneland. As this week's Gainesway of the Week, she discussed her milestone win with 28-1 longshot Baby Vino (Vino Rosso) and the rapid growth of her stable.Not only did the Haskell mark Schultz's first Grade I attempt, it was also the first Grade I victory for jockey Jorge Vargas Jr. and owners Cosmo Stables and Delta Squad Racing. When asked about the stewards' inquiry following Baby Vino's run up the rail, Schultz admitted she was thrilled with her trainee's performance regardless of the outcome.“The horse ran a huge race, so I wasn't disappointed or scared,” she recounted of her emotions as the inquiry progressed. “I was a little reluctant to celebrate and embrace the win. I thought watching it, he ran a good race and they kind of duked it out to the wire like any exciting horse race should be.”Schultz reflected on Baby Vino's physical and mental development, noting that the son of Vino Rosso had shown raw talent since his early works at Keeneland. After breaking his maiden in his fifth attempt this spring at Oaklawn Park, the colt has continued to progress. He powered home to a near 11-length victory in the Pegasus Stakes prior to the Haskell score.“In his two-turn races at Oaklawn, he seems like he made a run every time,” she said. “When he won, he still had traffic and still got stopped, but was able to overcome it that day. When he shipped up to Monmouth after the race at Oaklawn, he did start to develop and you could just see that he's not a really big horse, but he's not a small horse either. You could see him grow up some and it was good to see that. I think mentally he was always a little keen at times in his races at Oaklawn, but in the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth, he really relaxed.”Schultz, an alumna of the University of Louisville Equine Industry Program and the Godolphin Flying Start program, opened her stable in 2021 and now manages strings across Kentucky, Monmouth and Saratoga. She was featured in the TDN last month following Baby Vino's Pegasus victory.Reflecting on her journey since and the wave of support she has received since the Haskell win, she said, “It's a really big deal for our barn. It's a big deal for the horse. It's a big race.
