Momentum has filed a Freedom of Information request seeking official data on the impact of July’s extreme heat and widespread power outages on public health. The party is asking the Ministry for Health to disclose the number of heat-related hospital admissions recorded during July 2026, together with anonymised locality data.It is also requesting the daily number of deaths recorded during the month, the number of sudden, unexpected or unattended deaths, and any records, reports or assessments linking deaths to the extreme heat. For comparison, Momentum has also requested the total number of deaths recorded in July 2023, 2024 and 2025.The request follows growing public concern over the possible health impact of the recent heatwave and repeated power outages that left thousands of homes and businesses without electricity across Malta and Gozo.Momentum stressed that it is not requesting any personal identifying information, with all data sought in an anonymised format.“We want to establish the impact the electrical outages and the heat wave had on the health of our community,” Momentum executive member Katya Compagno said.“For the sake of transparency and accountability, we are asking for timely access to accurate information to help in an informed public discussion.”The party said it now expects the authorities to respond to the request in line with Malta’s Freedom of Information Act and make the anonymised data available in the public interest.Should the government release the figures?•
