Malta is set to receive an advance payment of €931,014 from the European Union Solidarity Fund following the widespread damage caused by Storm Harry earlier this year.The funding forms part of a €103 million support package approved by the European Commission to help Malta, Portugal and Spain recover from severe storms and natural disasters.Storm Harry battered the Maltese Islands between 19th and 21st January 2026, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding and rough seas that caused significant disruption across the country.According to the European Commission, the storm resulted in coastal damage, flooding and transport disruption, while also impacting public infrastructure, ports, the fishing and aquaculture sectors, agricultural assets and local communities.The advance payment will help Malta begin financing recovery efforts, with further support expected once the full application process is completed.The EU Solidarity Fund was established in 2002 to assist countries recovering from major natural disasters and public health emergencies. Since its creation, it has provided more than €11 billion in financial assistance across 148 disasters, including 128 natural disasters and 20 public health emergencies, supporting 25 EU Member States and six accession countries.The latest funding package aims to help affected countries restore damaged infrastructure and support communities recovering from the impact of extreme weather events.What do you make of this?•
