Zach Cregger hits Resident Evil players with a double-barrel blast of fanservice in new trailer

Wait 5 sec.

In the newest trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, unsuspecting protagonist Bryan finds himself trapped in an isolated house with a zombie on his tail. His only defense is an unloaded double-barrel shotgun, and he spends most of the trailer hunting for bullets as his flesh-hungry foe closes in. It’s a terrifying moment that perfectly captures just how far out of his element Bryan is. It’s also a delightful bit of fanservice for Resident Evil fans, and the focus Cregger puts on it shows he’s done his homework. Resident Evil’s newest trailer sneaks in a long-running shotgun ammo joke The shotgun has been a staple of Resident Evil games since the 1997 original. Typically tucked away in the early stages of the game, its damage output can one-shot basic zombies, and its thick spread allows it to hit multiple targets with one shot. Its shells are usually among the rarest ammo types in the games. From desk drawers to refrigerators to sleazy standies, Resident Evil games love to stick ammo in unexpected places. Combining every inch of a jumbled room for precious shotgun shells is an experience Resident Evil fans are very familiar with, and they were quick to point out how well Cregger recaptures it. While Bryan almost immediately finds the shotgun, his search for shells quickly turns into a hunt as he checks cabinet tops and under beds, finally finding ammunition tucked away in a desk topped with a familiar typewriter. Comments on the trailer on YouTube and X applauded Bryan’s desperate search for shotgun ammo as “peak Resident Evil”. One commenter even noted that the shells Bryan eventually finds are of the same brand as the ones in Resident Evil 2, possibly cementing the film’s place in the official timeline. Seems like the Resident Evil movie takes place the same year of Resident Evil 4 and not Resident Evil 2 which is why there's a touchscreen cell phone it. The shotgun ammo in the movie is 'Heavy Field' branded which was in RE4 while RE2s shotgun ammo was called 'Steel Boy' pic.twitter.com/X39CArHSem— 🦩Vice City Baby 🌴 (@GtaGlazer) July 23, 2026 While Bryan’s ammo problems will probably only be a minor footnote in the film, it shows that Cregger is aware of the small in-jokes tossed around the Resident Evil fandom. It lends the film a feeling of authenticity few video game movies have, and it’s a big green flag for Resident Evil fans.0The post Zach Cregger hits Resident Evil players with a double-barrel blast of fanservice in new trailer appeared first on Destructoid.
