Prime Minister Robert Abela has said that Transport Malta will eventually issue a concession for the Manoel Island yacht marina through a public call.According to a report by MaltaToday, Abela made the comments while speaking to journalists following the Planning Authority’s approval of the controversial padel courts on Manoel Island, after being asked whether he could guarantee that no further commercialisation would take place on the island, which is set to become a national park.The Prime Minister maintained that the area currently occupied by the padel courts had always been designated as a sports facility and said this would not change.He also noted that the Manoel Island Yacht Yard, located on the side facing Sliema, was excluded from the MIDI concession that came to an end earlier this year.When questioned about the possibility of further developments on the island, Abela argued that safeguards are now in place because Manoel Island is public land.The Prime Minister also rejected suggestions that the illegal padel courts were developed by a private individual, stating that the facility belongs to Gżira United Football Club.He added that decisions regarding planning enforcement and the legality of developments ultimately rest with the Planning Authority.What do you make of Abela’s comments?Image: Sailink•
