Sustainable Mobility Minister Chris Bonett has revealed that more than five million Y-Plate journeys were recorded between February and May this year, highlighting what he says is a growing demand for alternative transport in Malta.Speaking in a video shared on social media, Bonett said the figure marks a sharp increase from the more than three million journeys recorded during the same four-month period in 2025.According to the minister, this represents an increase of around 68%, with demand for Y-Plate services growing much faster than the number of operators.While the number of licensed Y-Plate operators rose by 15.2% over the same period, Bonett argued that demand is outpacing supply, noting that each operator completed an average of 624 more trips than during the same period last year.Bonett said the figures show that more people, including locals and tourists, are choosing alternatives to private cars, alongside public transport and sea transport.He reiterated that the government’s approach is to encourage people to switch transport modes through better services and incentives, rather than by introducing measures that penalise car owners.Do you regularly use Y-Plate services?
