Are Fair Value Gaps Really Effective?GoldOANDA:XAUUSDNira_raFair Value Gap, or FVG, is one of the most widely discussed concepts in the Smart Money Concept community. Many traders believe that once price returns to an FVG, it automatically becomes a valid entry. But if it were that simple, why do so many FVGs get completely broken? The problem is not the tool. The problem is how we use it. What Exactly Is an FVG? An FVG usually forms after a strong price move, when aggressive buying or selling pressure pushes the market too quickly and leaves an imbalance across three candles. This area suggests that price was not traded efficiently. As a result, the market may return to rebalance the zone before continuing in the original direction. However, “price may return” does not mean “price will definitely react.” Why Do So Many FVGs Fail? The most common mistake is marking every imbalance on the chart and treating all FVGs as equally important. An FVG becomes more significant when it: Aligns with the main trend. Is created by clear displacement. Forms after liquidity has been swept. Sits near an important support, resistance, or structural zone. Has not been tested too many times. By contrast, an FVG located in the middle of a sideways market, against the broader structure, or created by weak momentum usually has a lower probability of producing a strong reaction. Do Not Enter Just Because Price Touches an FVG Price returning to an FVG is only the first step. Traders should still observe the actual price reaction: Is price clearly rejecting the zone? Is there displacement in the expected direction? Has the lower-timeframe structure shifted? Is the Stop Loss placed logically? Is the Reward-to-Risk ratio still attractive? Without confirmation, an FVG is only an area to monitor, not a complete entry signal. How to Use FVGs More Effectively Think of an FVG as one part of the broader market story: Liquidity sweep → strong displacement → FVG formation → price returns to the zone → confirmation appears. When these elements align, the setup has much stronger logic than blindly buying or selling simply because price has entered an imbalance zone.
