Paul Goldschmidt needed only one swing to make history and carry the Yankees to an important win.The veteran first baseman launched a solo home run in the fourth inning Friday night, providing the only run in New York’s 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies left-hander completed seven innings, permitting three hits and one earned run while striking out nine.Goldschmidt entered the game batting .255 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs. His historic shot raised his season total to 16 homers and 43 RBIs. The 2022 National League MVP now has 388 career home runs. The Yankees right-hander delivered one of his best performances of the season, throwing 7 1/3 scoreless innings. David Bednar then pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 19th save. He struck out one batter and needed only nine pitches to close out the victory.Schlittler improved to 10-6 and lowered his ERA to 2.07. The Yankees pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, no walks and only four hits. The victory moved New York to 58-45 and kept it 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
