Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – A group of 4-year-old fillies are set to do battle going nine furlongs in the GII Shuvee Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Friday, and the high priestess among them is the 9-5 morning-line favorite Scottish Lassie (McKinzie), who looked a picture while schooling in the paddock on Thursday morning.Lest we forget, the Jorge Abreu trainee won the GI Frizette Stakes as a juvenile and she added to her trophy case when she scorched the field by 15 lengths in the GI CCA Oaks last year.In her seasonal bow–a seven-furlong optional claimer at the Spa June 7–the filly was sharp as ever as she took control and never looked back to win by a healthy 8 1/2.If Scottish Lassie serves as the controlling speed once again, the Shuvee could well be hers.“She had a really good breeze with Jose [Ortiz] this morning,” Abreu said of a half-mile work in 47.80 seconds July 18 over the Spa main track. “She came out of it in good shape. That allowance race was a good starting point. You can see that she's back and she came out of that race really well.“To me, she looks stronger than she was as a 3-year-old, and that's what you want to see,” he said. “She's always been a very laid-back horse and very mature, and I like the way she looks. She's doing everything right and she loves Saratoga. I don't know what it is; she trains good anywhere you take her, but here she just thrives.”Standing in Scottish Lassie's way is the accomplished MGSW Fully Subscribed (Tiz the Law), who isn't about to let the presumptive favorite set the cruise control and kick back.Never out of the money across seven starts, the Chad Brown trainee should be very comfortable traveling the Shuvee distance having won the GII Mother Goose Stakes and the GIII Comley Stakes at the Big A late last year.After a runner-up finish in the La Troienne Stakes on the Derby undercard, Fully Subscribed ended up in a dead heat for second behind Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) in the GI Odgen Phipps Stakes at Saratoga June 5. The champion 3-year-old filly is expected to start against in the boys in the GI Whitney Stakes at the Spa next month.“She [Fully Subscribed] just got drowned there,” Brown said of the effort. “I really liked my horse going into that race, which goes to show you how good Nitrogen ran. I was pretty confident going in that my filly would run a big one and she was no match. With Nitrogen out of this race, we get some relief there, so let's see how she does.”Bless the Broken | Sarah AndrewThe filly who hit the wire with Full Subscribed in the Phipps was Bless the Broken (Laoban) who draws in here.Initially a member of Will Walden's shedrow where she performed well and hit the board in the GI Kentucky Oaks, Bless the Broken was sold for $950,000 during last year's Keeneland November Sale. Sent to Brad Cox, the filly was the runner-up in the GI Beholder Mile at Santa Anita Mar. 7, then third in the La Troienne.“Chad's filly got the best of us at Churchill, and they dead heated here with us last time–they seem like even fillies,” said Blake Cox, assistant to his father Brad. “Whoever gets the better trip beats the other, so hopefully we get the better trip and beat her this time.
