An iconic feature has been stripped from Disney Springs, the shopping, dining, and entertainment district at Walt Disney World Resort. The latest news comes amid an ongoing refurbishment project that shut down the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop near the World of Disney in the Marketplace neighborhood of the outdoor lifestyle complex.A Noticeable Removal at Disney SpringsCredit: EMLpotography, FlickrOn July 23, WDWNT reported that the illuminated Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop sign had disappeared from its original location in the Marketplace neighborhood at Disney Springs. Construction walls have surrounded the store since early July, when the store closed for refurbishment. Still, this is one of the first changes visible to Walt Disney World Resort guests.In addition to the removal of the iconic Ghirardelli sign, there have been some other visible changes to the exterior of the Marketplace neighborhood building. Paneling has clearly been removed from at least one wall and from around stained-glass windows, revealing plain back sheathing.Credit: GhirardelliHarlequin-print paneling and a wooden Ghirardelli sign remain at the front of the building. However, an overhang has been torn down nearby, right underneath where the illuminated sign used to be. Support poles for both the sign and the overhang remain in place. Some awnings also appear to have been removed, but those are just barely visible above the construction walls.It’s unclear whether the Ghirardelli sign is simply being removed for refurbishment or replaced entirely.
