The next God of War game will have Kratos as its lead

Wait 5 sec.

Though Santa Monica previously said that Kratos would be returning to the franchise at some point, we got official confirmation from Cory Barlog himself during the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con. Once God of War Laufey is done and dusted, the studio expects to work on a new God of War game and will bring back the ol’ Spartan as the title’s lead character. Kratos led the franchise for over 20 years, with Laufey being the first game in the series not to star him as the main character, or at least co-main. The announcement of Faye taking charge in the new God of War game sparked some controversy, with people piling up on the title simply because it’ll have a female lead, though quite a few complaints were tied to the lack of Kratos himself since, as they argued, it’s pointless to have a God of War game without, well, the god of war. Santa Monica then clarified that Kratos isn’t going anywhere, but now it’s official. Kratos has sat in the main character chair since 2005. Image via PlayStation Santa Monica also set the release date for God of War Laufey, aiming for a Feb. 16, 2027 launch, so I guess we’ll know exactly how well it handled the change in tone and character between Kratos and his better half. At any rate, though, Laufey will give us a first look at many mysteries surrounding the kinda all-over-the-place God of War setting, including what happens to gods when they die, how that’s tied to the corporeal worlds they led, and so on and so forth. I think the addition of that cube thing was avoidable but, who knows, perhaps it’ll be the coolest part about it. 0The post The next God of War game will have Kratos as its lead appeared first on Destructoid.
