‘It’s an insult to your community:’ Halo Campaign Evolved drops to mixed reviews amid accusations of AI voice ‘acting’

Microsoft’s attempt to revitalize one of its best games through a remake isn’t going over so well, as the game now has mixed Steam reviews. Most of the complaints stem from the fact that the remake seems to have only taken care of the graphics, whereas other aspects of the game were left in a very rough shape. “If you look at the game from a PURELY graphical standpoint, it’s gorgeous,” said one negative review. “Unfortunately, this game feels rushed, incomplete, and just leaves so much to be desired. Good graphics can only take you so far. MCC exists for a reason, and I’m grateful to be able to boot those classics up any time I want.” The review specifically criticizes the voice acting, which its author says is “despicable,” a label that they claim applies across the board. But at least the English voicework isn’t made by AI, as opposed to the French one. Image via Xbox As outlined by the top negative review on the game, “In French, the voices are AI.” “I would have felt more respected if you used the voice from the original game. It’s an insult to your community,” the review reads. Using AI to dub an entire language, and one that probably has millions of players hopping onto the game, is as ill-advised a decision as it sounds. While I’m not saying they could’ve gotten away with using AI for some less-known language, it probably would not have gone over as badly as it did. It’s not like there isn’t a plethora of talented, passionate French voice actors out there. Or, and this is just a shot in the dark, Microsoft could’ve just used the original game’s voicework. In general, the player sentiment on Steam is that the game is “unfinished and unpolished” and that it needed to spend more time in development. Unfortunately, it seems Halo Studios was going through a rough patch regarding this remake, and that it even released is a major achievement for the studio. 0The post ‘It’s an insult to your community:’ Halo Campaign Evolved drops to mixed reviews amid accusations of AI voice ‘acting’ appeared first on Destructoid.
