Samsung has launched its new flagship smartphone with a book-style foldable display, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. While the device brings many improvements over its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, these are the features, or rather upgrades, that stand out the most.Super-slim buildThe Galaxy Z Fold 7 was already one of the thinnest foldable phones on the market, being slimmer than even some conventional slab phones. Samsung has pushed the design refinement even further with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. While the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, measure 8.9mm when folded, the new model is just 4.1mm thick when unfolded, compared to 4.2mm for its predecessor, making it the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet. The 0.1mm reduction may sound minor on paper, but during our brief hands-on experience, the latest flagship felt sleeker and more comfortable to hold. What's even more impressive is that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is thinner while also offering many major upgrades, including a larger battery, an upgrade that would typically require a thicker chassis. The company achieved this by switching to a silicon-carbon battery, which offers higher energy density than a conventional lithium-ion battery. In other words, it can store more energy in the same amount of space, allowing the company to increase battery capacity without making the phone any thicker. It uses an ultra-thin titanium-alloy film beneath the foldable OLED panel, along with a flexible titanium support plate underneath.Samsung says the titanium-alloy film is about one-third the thickness of a human hair while offering three times the mechanical stiffness of the polymer film used in the previous generation. The titanium plate further supports the display, minimizes air gaps, and keeps the screen more stable when unfolded. The result is a crease that is less visible than before. It's so subtle that it is almost invisible in many viewing conditions. Although it retains the same size as the Galaxy Z Fold 7's inner screen, its resolution has increased from 1,968 Ã 2,184 to 2,256 Ã 2,504 pixels. As a result, the pixel density has also risen from 368 PPI to 422 PPI, making the content on the screen noticeably sharper.Peak brightness has increased from 2,600 nits to 3,000 nits, improving outdoor visibility. On top of that, Samsung has added an anti-reflective coating that reduces glare by up to 50%, making content easier to see while helping the display appear brighter in challenging lighting conditions.Stronger cover display protectionOne of the upgrades that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra offers over its predecessor that Samsung hasn't advertised widely is improved protection for the cover display. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 featured Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, the new model has the Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. That translates to roughly twice the drop resistance. It means that during everyday use, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra's cover display is less likely to crack if you accidentally drop the phone. The latest Snapdragon processor for Ultra-grade performanceThe Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy found in the Galaxy Z Fold 7.According to Qualcomm, the new chipset delivers:Up to 20% faster CPU performance with 35% better power efficiencyUp to 23% faster GPU performance with 20% better power efficiencyUp to 37% faster NPU performance with 16% better performance per wattAround 16% better overall SoC power efficiencyThese improvements should translate into faster app launches, smoother multitasking, better AI performance, and longer battery life.Larger battery and faster chargingSamsung has also improved battery life by increasing the battery capacity from 4,400mAh on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to 5,000mAh on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. That's an increase of around 13% and the largest battery of any Fold yet.Combined with the more power-efficient chipset and the anti-reflective display coating that should allow the user to use the screen at a lower brigtness, the larger battery should deliver a noticeable improvement in endurance. The charging speed has also received a welcome upgrade. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra supports 45W wired and 20W wireless charging, compared to 25W wired and 15W wireless charging on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Higher-resolution ultra-wide cameraSamsung has upgraded the ultra-wide camera as well. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra replaces the Galaxy Z Fold 7's 12MP ultra-wide sensor with a new 50MP unit. As a result, you can expect brighter images, improved sharpness, and better overall image quality from the ultra-wide camera, especially in challenging lighting conditions.Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra brings improvements across almost every aspect of the experience. While some upgrades may seem incremental on paper, together they make Samsung's latest foldable a noticeably more refined device than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and arguably the best book-style foldable phone overall on the market.
